Internet telephony, also known as IP telephony or broadband telephony, is the mode of communication where all communications such as voice calls, video calls and other communications like SMSand fax happen using the internet as a medium of connection. The best part about internet telephony is that it is highly cost effective as well as it is very convenient too because it allows people to communicate using fax, voice and video calls from anywhere in the world as long as they are connected to the internet. However, the catch is that the connection of internet-based calls may not be as strong as the traditional telephone lines.
Just to bust a widely believed myth, we’d like to highlight that internet telephony is different from VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol), although people use these terms interchangeably. Internet telephony is an umbrella term that covers various digital communication systems involving internet protocols whereas Voice over Internet Protocol, as the name suggests, is a system using internet telephony to transmit voice (and video) over the internet allowing people to make internet-based calls instead of regular calls. VoIP is being widely used in India and if you need an example, look at all the WhatsApp or Skype calls that you make because they are all happening through VoIP.
